Point of View

Definition: Point of view is a literary term that refers to the perspective from which a story is told.
Purpose: To show how the point of view shapes a theme.

Types of Point of View:

1. Objective Point of View

The writer tells what happens without stating more than can be inferred from the story's action and dialogue. The narrator never tell anything about what the characters think or feel.

2. Third Person Point of View

The narrator does not participate in the action of the story as one of the characters, but let us know exactly how the characters feel and inner thoughts.

3. First Person Point of View

In the first person point of view, the narrator does participate in the action of the story. When reading stories in the first person, we need to realize that the narrator might not be reliable.

4. Omniscient and Limited Omniscient Points of View

A narrator, who knows everything about all the characters, is all knowing, or omniscient.

Important to Remember: The narrator is a device, and point of view is a technique that an author uses to influence the way a reader perceives what is happening in the story. Example: In the story "The Grass-Eaters," narrator is the first person who participates in the story. e.g. "I was a tutor to a spherical boy"

The types of point of view is a little bit confused. I think the best way to sort them is as below (from More on Elements of Fiction)
first person third person
*omniscient *limitedomniscient *objective

ominiscient, limitedomniscient and objective, these 3 elements should be included in the third person. if you wanna see more details, plese go to see "More on Elements of Fiction" in Linda's blog homepage.

a) Point of view is a literary term that refers to the perspective from which a story is told.
b) Because narrator is used to influence the way a reader interprets a story, we need to find narrator first.
c)The narrator is not the author (author write the story, but never in the story)
May be the main character or minor character
But narrator is unreliable. Some times, the narrator is not the character in the story. If not, we must find the perspective from a third-person.

BUT
The third-person.......
May know the characters including their inner thoughts
May have limited knowledge of the characters
May just describe the objectively of the characters
Narrator does not necessarily hold or reflect the author’s view

SO
when u r selecting evidence about point of view, u need to find key words first
BECAUSE
Key words are used to help us to find the both narrator and point of view

Example:
In the story “War” by luigi Pirandello
The narrator of the war is “fat man”
Key words: “die” “survive” “sob” “cry”
The point of view of “War” is the families are afraid and heartbroken that their children will not survive during the war.
